Hyde Park London

Hyde Park is one of the largest parks in London and one of the Royal Parks.  350 acres of beautiful green space right in the heart of London.  Many people head to Hyde Park to relax and enjoy the green spaces. You can visit a number of famous memorials including the most recent one, Diana’s memorial, an oval stone ring of moving water.

The park was created in 1536 by Henry VIII for hunting.  He had acquired the park from the monks of Westminster Abbey. It was opend to the public 100 years later in 1637 by King Charles I.  The parks current layout was planned by architect Decimus Burton in 1825 and now houses over 4,000 trees, a large lake, a meadow and a number of ornamental flower gardens.

Over the years it became a venue for national celebration. Prince Regent organised fireworks to mark the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1814. The Great Exhibition was held there and in 1977 a Silver Jubilee Exhibition was held in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s 25 years on the throne.
