London Eye

The London Eye a relativly new attraction which opened in 2000. It is a giant cantilevered observation wheel that lies on the South Bank of the River Thames.  It is Europe’s tallest Ferris wheel at 135 metres tall and it is the highest public viewing point in London.  The wheel has 32 sealed air conditioned capsules.  Interestingly they are numbered 1 to 33 as there is no casule named 13. The designers or builders must have been slightly superstitious!  Apparently on average it receives more visitors per year than the Taj Mahal and the Great Pyramids of Giza.

The experience lasts around 30 minutes where visitors can take in the breathtaking 360-degree views of the Capital. The London eye is now one of London’s top tourist attractions and a great way to see a panoramic view of London. On a clear day you can see up to 25 miles away.

London is proud of its LGBT community and in December 2005 the London Eye was lit pink in celebration of the first Civil Partnership performed on the wheel.
